John O'Connor awarded the 2021 Peter Bryce Prize for Whistleblowing


O'Connor's reports, starting in 2006, of an unexpected number of cancers and other health problems among the residents of the remote northern Alberta community of Fort Chipewyan were rebuffed by authorities and led to an ongoing fifteen year struggle for the health rights of this largely Indigenous community and others downstream from the Alberta oil sands.

CFE Presentation to Alberta Standing Committee on Whistleblower Protection


CFE Senior Fellows, David Hutton and Ian Bron met with Alberta Legislature's Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship as part of its review of the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act.

The made a presentation, which included PowerPoint slides, as well as shared the CFEWI Criteria for Evaluating the Protection of Whistleblowers, and presented the CFEWI Evaluation of Alberta's current Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act.

Two Eminent Canadian Whistleblowers Join CFE Whistleblowing Initiatives Steering Committee


Michèle Brill-Edwards and John O'Connor are joining the CFE Whistleblower Initiatives Steering Committee which  guides the Centre for Free Expression's many whistleblowing initiatives. Other members include Sandy BoucherIan BronDavid HuttonPeter JacobsenAnna MyersAmélie PerronEdgar SchmidtJames L Turk, and David Yazbeck.

Peter Bryce Prize for Whistleblowing

Earlier this year, the CFE introduced Peter Bryce Prize to honour individuals who serve the greater good by courageously speaking up about wrongdoing and abuses of public trust. The Prize will be awarded annually by the Centre for Free Expression.
